9 of the Top 100 Military-Friendly Employers Are Insurers

The Top 100 Military Friendly Employers list has been released, and the insurance industry has claimed close to 10 percent of the slots with two in the top 10, including No. 1 USAA and No. 6 Combined Insurance Company of America.
The eleventh annual survey was conducted by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs. Rankings were based on a comprehensive survey of more than 100 questions, overseen by an independent advisory board of industry experts.
According to the company, the survey assesses the long-term commitment of each employer to the hiring and recruitment of military personnel, the institution of policies in support of Reserve and National Guard members called to active duty, and the development of military spouse programs.
To be eligible for the list, private sector companies must show annual revenues of more than $500 million. (Around 5,000 companies are considered at this time with just two percent making the final list.) Ernst & Young certified this year’s survey data, methodology, and resulting rankings.
“There is so much dialogue about hiring veterans that it’s difficult for service members to tell which organizations and businesses are actually doing it, and which companies are a good fit and good to work for,” said Sean Collins, vice president of Victory Media. “We hear from veterans that it’s impossible to research the thousands of companies that might be military-friendly. Our objective is to present a transparent, data-driven list of pre-vetted institutions for service members to start their job search and find the best fit for them.”
Collins called the competition for inclusion on the list “vehement,” adding that inclusion enables these employers to more easily recruit top-tier military talent. “Each year companies taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an advisory board consisting of leaders in the military recruitment community.”
Progressive (No. 86) is a multi-time recipient of the honor. In a recent statement, the company’s National Recruiting Director, John Hoppes, said the company was “very proud to once again be recognized for our strong commitment to military recruiting efforts across the company, at all of our locations countrywide.”
Hoppes continued: “Transitioning service members bring a competitive and unique skill set to our work environment. We seek out people who can think strategically and are up for a challenge.”
Here’s the full rundown of the top 100.
